MUHAMMADIYAH.OR.ID, YOGYAKARTA — The Central Board of Muhammadiyah has formally accepted a grant of Megou Pak University from the Tulang Bawang regency administration. Muhammadiyah will manage the institution as a satellite campus of the Muhammadiyah University of Jakarta, known as UMJ.
The final handover took place during a plenary session of the Tulang Bawang Regional Legislative Council on Tuesday (23/12). Local officials described the move as a milestone in strengthening higher education services in Lampung Province.
During the session, the council approved the transfer of regional government assets that include a 10-hectare site, academic buildings and supporting facilities. Officials valued the assets at more than 66 billion rupiah. The property will operate under the name Muhammadiyah University of Jakarta, Tulang Bawang Campus.
Hilman Latief, the treasurer general of Muhammadiyah Central Board, said the decision reflected strong public trust in the organization.
“Muhammadiyah feels honored and grateful to the regent, the deputy regent and the Tulang Bawang council for entrusting us with the task of strengthening higher education services,” Mr. Hilman said in a separate interview on Wednesday (24/12). He added that the initiative would serve not only Tulang Bawang residents but also the wider Lampung region.
Road Map Toward an Operational Campus
Mr. Hilman said Muhammadiyah viewed the grant as a responsibility that required sustained and serious effort. UMJ, which holds a top national accreditation rating, has begun preparing strategic steps under the supervision of Muhammadiyah’s higher education and research council.
The preparations include drafting a development road map, upgrading infrastructure and academic systems, and completing operational licensing requirements. Mr. Hilman expressed hope that the process could be completed soon.
“We aim for the campus to operate effectively within the next one to two years,” he said.
Tulang Bawang Regent Qudrotul Ikhwan urged Muhammadiyah and UMJ to move quickly from planning to implementation. He said the local government expected to see concrete progress on the ground, especially in preparing facilities and academic needs for incoming students.
Muhammad Hadi, UMJ’s vice rector for academic affairs, confirmed the university’s readiness to manage and develop the campus. He said UMJ would bring its institutional experience to improve educational quality in the region.
“We are ready to apply Muhammadiyah’s education system, which prioritizes academic excellence, research and community service,” Mr. Hadi said.
With the grant now finalized, both sides expect the partnership to expand access to higher education, develop skilled human resources and support long-term social and economic progress in Tulang Bawang.
