Muhammadiyah Has Great Potential to Develop Ethical and Beneficial AI for the Advancement of the Ummah

MUHAMMADIYAH.OR.ID, JAKARTA – Artificial Intelligence (AI), in its various forms, is widely acknowledged for its many benefits. However, the technology also faces serious challenges, such as data bias that can lead to gender and ethnic stereotypes. Therefore, a key challenge going forward is how to develop more ethical AI that can benefit humanity.

This was conveyed by Derry Tanti Wijaya, Associate Professor and Program Coordinator of Data Science at Monash University Indonesia, during an Islamic lecture of the Central Board of Muhammadiyah titled “The Future of Muhammadiyah in the Era of Artificial Intelligence: Developing AI that is Beneficial, Ethical, and Progressive”, held on Friday (23/01) at the Muhammadiyah Headquarters in Jakarta

AI operates based on the data it is trained on, which often leads to serious issues such as gender and ethnic bias. Derry believes Muhammadiyah is well positioned to address these problems, given its vast network of charitable institutions that can serve as rich and diverse data sources.

Muhammadiyah Potency in AI Development

“Because Muhammadiyah is deeply rooted in society through, for example, school networks across Indonesia. Imagine if we could use that data to train more inclusive models that understand our languages and cultures. By doing so, we could prevent AI from producing incorrect or misleading responses,” Derry explained.

Knowledge or Etiquette: Which Should Come First?

Given this position, he encouraged the development of AI that is both beneficial and ethical for the advancement of the ummah.

“We must develop AI that aligns with humanitarian values: safe, ethical, and truly beneficial. Once again, this is where Muhammadiyah’s position is actually very strategic in developing and utilizing AI,” Derry emphasized.

He added that AI should empower humans rather than create dependency. Since AI will inevitably widen the digital divide, AI literacy must be rapidly improved to ensure the progress of the ummah.

“And here again, Muhammadiyah’s presence in society is already so deep and its reach so wide. This position can be leveraged to use and develop AI while shaping the AI itself. We have the opportunity to shape the kind of AI we want. AI that is more beneficial for the ummah and contributes to its advancement,” Derry concluded. (Janu)
