MUHAMMADIYAH.OR.ID, YOGYAKARTA – Muhammadiyah, founded in 1912, has built its movement on Islamic values, with activities spanning education, health care, social services, and economic development. At the core of these efforts lies a concept often described as functional Tauhid (Islamic monotheism).
This theological foundation continues to inspire the organization’s mission to serve humanity. As a result, Muhammadiyah has positioned itself at the forefront of both education and health services among Islamic organizations.
The scale of its institutional network underscores that ambition. Muhammadiyah currently oversees 163 Muhammadiyah-’Aisyiyah University and 129 Muhammadiyah-’Aisyiyah Hospitals. All operate under a unified legal framework within the organization. Muhadjir Effendy, Chairperson of Muhammadiyah Central Board, said the organization’s higher education systems has led to a notable distinction. It now holds the largest number of medical faculties of any Islamic organization globally.
“I believe there is no other religious organization in the world with as many medical faculties as Muhammadiyah,” said Muhadjir Effendy on Tuesday (17/4) at the East Java Muhammadiyah Provincial Headquarters.
A Nationwide Network of Medical Education
As of 2026, Muhammadiyah operates 23 medical faculties across Indonesia. These include seven faculties of dentistry and 16 specialist medical programs. In terms of accreditation, two dental faculties and nine medical faculties have achieved the highest national rating.
Importantly, these institutions are distributed across Indonesia, extending beyond Java to reach eastern Indonesia. This geographic spread reflects a broader commitment to equitable access to medical education.

Meanwhile, further expansion is underway. Muhammadiyah University of Education in Sorong, Southwest Papua (UNIMUDA) is preparing to establish a medical faculty. If completed, it would become the first private university in Papua to offer such a program.
