MUHAMMADIYAH.OR.ID, JAKARTA – Muhammadiyah has acknowledged its limitation in addressing ongoing conflicts in the Middle East, calling instead for broad, cross-sector collaboration to resolve both war and its humanitarian consequences.
The message was delivered by Syafiq A. Mughni, Chairperson of Muhammadiyah Central Board. He stated the remarks during a Friday evening religious gathering held at the organization’s headquarters in Central Jakarta (24/4).
While the aspiration for a peaceful and just world remains widely shared, Syafiq noted that human history continues to be marked with conflict and violence. These realities, he said, have produced far-reaching humanitarian impacts that extend beyond regional boundaries.
However, he stressed that war and conflict must never be accepted as normal conditions. Instead, they should be treated as urgent challenges requiring serious and sustained efforts.
“As a socio-religious organization, we do not claim to be able to resolve every global issue,” he said. “Especially when these conflicts originate elsewhere but ultimately affect us all.”
A Shared Responsibility in Addressing Global Conflict
Syafiq pointed to ongoing tensions in the Middle East as an example of crises with global repercussions. He referenced Qur’anic guidance, particularly Surah Al-Anfal, to underline the importance of collective responsibility in preventing wider harm.
In light of this, he urged Muhammadiyah members to actively support humanitarian efforts. Helping those in distress is a moral obligation rooted in the organization’s commitment to tauhid expressed through social action.
The gathering itself was framed as an opportunity to deepen public understanding of global dynamics, especially the Middle East conflict and its implications for Indonesia.
The session featured several prominent speakers, including Hajriyanto Y. Thohari, former Indonesian ambassador to Lebanon; Yuli Mumpuni Widarso, former ambassador to Algeria and Spain; and a former Indonesian ambassador to the United Kingdom, Ireland, and the International Maritime Organization.
