President of Muhammadiyah Haedar Nashir recently met with the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar Ahmed Muhammad Ahmed el-Tayeb in Jakarta on Thursday (July 11). In the meeting, Haedar expressed his deep appreciation for the Grand Imam’s tireless efforts in promoting Islamic moderation on a global scale.
Haedar commended Ahmed el-Tayeb’s collaboration with Pope Francis in advocating for a moderate approach to religious thought and practice, particularly in the face of rising global extremism. He emphasized the importance of maintaining a balance between religious beliefs and openness to peaceful coexistence with people of other faiths.
In the meeting, Haedar also expressed his hope that the Grand Imam of Al Azhar, in collaboration with other world leaders and Islamic figures, will continue their efforts to achieve the independence of Palestine and establish a new era of peace in the Middle East.
“Without a viable solution for Palestine, extremism will continue to grow in various aspects of life,” Haedar asserted.
While acknowledging the significance of moderation, Haedar argued that it is not enough to simply avoid extremism. He believes that religious values should also serve as a driving force for progress and the advancement of human civilization.
Haedar cited surah Al-Baqarah verse 143 that Muslims are referred to as a ‘median community’ that serves as a witness. This signifies bearing witness through contributions to civilizational progress. Wherever Muslims are present, they should act as problem solvers.
The discussion also highlighted the importance of disseminating progressive Islam. This shared principle forms a cornerstone of the collaboration between Muhammadiyah and Al Azhar.
Haedar emphasized the challenges faced by the Islamic world due to economic backwardness. He pointed out that this economic stagnation has led to a decline in the Muslim world’s influence on the international political stage. Additionally, a lack of investment in scientific research and technological development has left Muslim nations at a disadvantage.
Nashir argued that these factors contribute to a weakened position for the Muslim world on the global front. He underscored the need for economic progress and scientific advancement to achieve prosperity and well-being for Muslim communities around the world.
The meeting also addressed the potential for enhanced cooperation between Al-Azhar and Muhammadiyah. Haedar acknowledged that there may be differences in beliefs and schools of thought within Islam. However, he emphasized that these differences should not hinder cooperation towards common goals.
