Resisting Religious Regimentation, Haedar: Indonesian Is Neither a Religious Nor Secular State

MUHAMMADIYAH.OR.ID, JAKARTA – The 48th Congress (Muktamar) of Muhammadiyah brought in six strategic issues which will become the foci of Muhammadiyah from 2022 to 2027.

According to the President of Muhammadiyah Haedar Nashir, strategic issues are crucial phenomena happening in society and requiring solutions.

One of the strategic issues is regarding religious regimentation. This phenomenon begins to occur and must be prevented.

“Religious regimentation ensues when religious views or groups of people are biased, tendentious, and subjective and are fused with the state so that religion becomes an instrument of the state’s power. This notion is against the basic construction and goal of Indonesia as a Pancasila state,” Haedar said at the program of Dialektiva TvMu on Saturday (10/12).

Haedar, a sociologist professor, mentioned that Pancasila is a pact of the founding fathers of this nation and should be maintained. Muhammadiyah issued an official document ‘Darul Ahdi wa Syahadah’ to prevent the ideology.

“This state is a joint agreement, and we may not change the state system. Indonesia is neither a secular nor religious country, so don’t turn this country into a religious one,” Haedar said.

“We object to a caliphate system and refuse certain religious understanding, madhhab (school of thought), and religious power to be applied in a state system through politics,” Haedar added.

If this problem drags on, Indonesia may lose Pancasila and confront horizontal conflicts as a civil war in Europe.

“Besides, interfaith conflicts may happen to fight the religious power behind the state,” Haedar said.

“In Islam, we have a term ‘mihnah‘ (a test), which a madhhab dominates and overthrows other madhhabs. It may not occur and will be our concern,” Haedar highlighted.
