Strengthening Its Global Role, Muhammadiyah EMT Prepares for WHO Verification

MUHAMMADIYAH.OR.ID, YOGYAKARTA – Muhammadiyah Emergency Medical Team (Muhammadiyah EMT) is preparing to undergo an international verification process by the World Health Organization (WHO) on 18-19 October 2025.

This step marks an important moment for Muhammadiyah in strengthening its humanitarian role on the global stage through internationally standardized emergency medical services.

Head of the Muhammadiyah EMT, dr. Corona Rintawan, explained that the journey toward this verification has been long and thoroughly prepared over the past few years. Preparations began in 2020 but were delayed due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

“After the Muhammadiyah Muktamar National Congress in Surakarta, the spirit to continue the verification process grew stronger. Indonesia, which was initially under the South East Asia Regional Office, has now moved to the West Pacific Regional Office. With this change, WHO decided to resume the progress through a pre-verification process in July,” said dr. Corona on Friday (17/10).

Corona also added that during the pre-verification process, Muhammadiyah EMT received full support from the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) in Germany, in collaboration with International Search and Rescue Germany (ISAR Germany). This collaboration has strengthened Muhammadiyah EMT’s capacity to meet various global standards set by WHO.

“For the past three years, we have received a lot of support from RKI and ISAR Germany. Finally, last July, we were considered ready to move forward to the international verification stage, which will be held this Saturday and Sunday,” he added.

Thorough Preparation and Standardization of Emergency Medical Service

Ahead of this important moment in enhancing international standards with WHO, dr. Corona explained that the Muhammadiyah EMT team has carried out various technical preparations, ranging from standard operating procedures and logistics readiness to comprehensive medical equipment.

He also revealed that the team conducted a “field drill on 15-17 September as a form of readiness simulation. This commitment reflects Muhammadiyah’s consistent steps to ensure fast, effective, and humanitarian-based emergency health services.

“Since 2016, MDMC has been part of the Emergency Medical Team Supportive Initiative Working Group, which operates under WHO’s coordination. Until now, MDMC remains the only institution in Indonesia that is an official WHO partner in EMT-related issues,” he said.

With the goal of providing the best service to disaster survivors and a commitment to continuously improving standards, dr. Corona hopes that Muhammadiyah EMT can continue to grow and contribute to the disaster sector both nationally and internationally.

“To ensure the best service, the standards must also align. This way, we can play a greater role in improving the nation’s welfare. These efforts are certainly not easy and require a lot of sacrifice. But this is where the value of service lies, and we must keep striving to do our best in all sectors,” said dr. Corona.

The international verification process to be conducted directly by WHO marks a historic moment for Muhammadiyah EMT to strengthen its role professionally and globally. Through collaboration at all levels and a spirit of helping others and honoring life, Muhammadiyah continues its commitment to delivering excellent and standardized emergency medical services, both nationally and internationally.
