MDMC Quick Response to the Bantul Earthquake

MUHAMMADIYAH.OR.ID, BANTUL – A 6.4 magnitude earthquake hit Bantul, Yogyakarta, on Saturday evening (June 30). It also shook other areas such as Kulonprogo, Nganjuk, Kebumen, Ponorogo, Kediri, and Mojokerto.

According to the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) of D.I. Yogyakarta and Muhammadiyah Disaster Management Center (MDMC) of D.I. Yogyakarta, the earthquake caused mild to moderate damage in Gunungkidul (73 buildings), Bantul (35 buildings), Kulon Progo (6 buildings), and Sleman (1 building).

In D.I.Yogyakarta, 115 buildings were affected, including 105 houses, 5 government facilities, 1 healthcare, 1 worship place, 1 workplace, and 2 educational facilities. Besides, SMP Muhammadiyah 2 Gamping also suffered minor damage.

Following the earthquake, the MDMC of D.I. Yogyakarta immediately deployed a task force to assess disaster-affected areas in Bantul, Kulonprogo, Gunungkidul, Sleman, and Yogyakarta City.

The task force urged residents to remain calm and ensured the safety of their homes. One affected resident was hospitalized at RS PKU Muhammadiyah Bantul, while RS PKU Jogja and PKU Gamping were put on standby in case of further affected residents.

Dr. Ahmad Faesol, Deputy Chairman of the Muhammadiyah Regional Board of Yogyakarta, emphasized the importance of earthquake risk reduction by encouraging the MDMC of D.I. Yogyakarta to perform accurate, participative, and accountable emergency responses. Additionally, several Muhammadiyah hospitals and higher education institutions would be engaged in emergency responses.
