Reflecting on Sumpah Pemuda: Muhammadiyah Urges Indonesian Youth to Embrace Unity

MUHAMMADIYAH.OR.ID, YOGYAKARTA – As Indonesia commemorated the 95th Sumpah Pemuda (Youth Pledge) Day on October 28, 2023, President of Muhammadiyah Haedar Nashir conveyed a powerful message to the nation’s youth. Haedar highlighted the paramount importance of unity within diversity, reflecting on the historical significance of the Sumpah Pemuda and the lessons it offers for the younger generation.

The Sumpah Pemuda holds a distinguished moment in Indonesia’s history, symbolizing the unwavering spirit of the nation’s youth. These pioneers were driven by a profound commitment to being an integral part of a sovereign and unified Indonesia.

Prior to the official declaration of Indonesia’s independence on August 18, 1945, the Sumpah Pemuda was a watershed moment, reflecting the earnest desire of the country’s young minds for unity amidst diversity as the path to freedom.

“Young people should continue to embrace inclusive interactions. We come from diverse backgrounds, but as we aspire to become a united nation with global engagement, these aspirations necessitate rich experiences and inclusive, pluralistic, and diverse social relations,” said Haedar.

“Diversity teaches us unity, and unity fosters an appreciation of differences. These ideas are drawn from the profound social experiences of our youth,” added Haedar.

Haedar encouraged today’s Indonesian youth to proactively solve problems. The youth should play a pivotal role in resolving conflicts and working towards common ground within diversity. He underlined that complacency with past achievements is not an option.

“This journey demands persistent effort, laden with challenges, to attain maturity as stewards of the future, bearing responsibilities for themselves, families, communities, the nation, and humanity,” said Haedar.

“May the youth persist in their dynamic and progressive endeavors and become united in their pursuit of a brighter future,” hoped Haedar.

Sumpah Pemuda continues to serve as a potent reminder of the indomitable spirit of Indonesia’s youth and their commitment to unity within diversity. This legacy transcends generations and resonates strongly in the nation’s ongoing journey.
