MUHAMMADIYAH.OR.ID, YOGYAKARTA – Muhammadiyah has taken an active role in leading a global initiative to combat climate change by officially inaugurating the Muhammadiyah Climate Center (MCC) on Friday (November 17).

The inauguration occurred at the closing of the Global Forum for Climate Movement: Promoting Green Culture, Innovation, and Cooperation, held at Universitas Ahmad Dahlan (UAD), Yogyakarta.

President of Muhammadiyah Haedar Nashir presided over the MCC unveiling ceremony alongside Chairmen of Muhammadiyah Syafiq A. Mughni and Anwar Abbas. Notable attendees included the Head of the Foreign Policy and Strategy Agency of the Republic of Indonesia Yayan Ganda Hayat Mulyana, and Director of Operations at ViriyaENB Yonata Syarief. The kick-off was also attended by the Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture Muhadjir Effendy, Director-General of Multilateral Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Tri Tharyat, Philippine Ambassador to Indonesia Gina A. Jamoralin, and European Union Ambassador to Indonesia Denis Chaibi.

“Muhammadiyah has addressed environmental issues over the past two decades, with a current focus on the issue of climate change,” said Haedar.

The launch of MCC seamlessly aligns with the theme of Muhammadiyah’s 111th anniversary, “Ikhtiar Menyelamatkan Semesta” (Commitment to Save the World).

“The MCC will become a pivotal instrument for Muhammadiyah’s renewed commitment to addressing global climate change,” said Haedar.

Indeed, the Global Forum for Climate Movement, featuring participants from 13 countries, is promising prospects, according to Haedar Nashir. The forum aims to formulate innovative movements, approaches, and paradigms to promote sustainable environmental practices globally.

“We aspire to cultivate a global movement that brings together diverse communities and nations in a collective effort for environmental and ecosystem conservation,” said Haedar.

Besides, General Secretary of Muhammadiyah Abdul Mu’ti mentioned the MCC establishment aims to create more organized community-driven climate movement, which focuses on three aspects: reinforcing ongoing movements, advancing research on environmental preservation, and advocating for environmentally friendly public policies.
