MUHAMMADIYAH.OR.ID, KUNINGAN – Muhammadiyah maintains its impactful global presence in education. In a recent statement, Abdul Mu’ti, the General Secretary of Muhammadiyah, revealed that there are currently approximately 1,000 international students enrolled in Muhammadiyah universities and colleges.
“Muhammadiyah continues to receive requests from several ambassadors seeking scholarships. The latest agreement involved granting a scholarship to a student from Sudan to pursue studies at a Muhammadiyah university,” said Mu’ti.
Primarily focused on students from conflict-ridden areas or regions, Muhammadiyah’s scholarships serve as a bridge to education. Mu’ti specifically highlighted Palestine as a prime example.
In addition to offering scholarships, Muhammadiyah is actively establishing educational institutions in conflict zones. Notably, a Muhammadiyah elementary school has been inaugurated in Lebanon to cater to Palestinian children.
“We have also set up two Muhammadiyah schools in Lebanon, specifically in Beirut, for Palestinian refugees,” Mu’ti disclosed. “All the students are Palestinians.”
Mu’ti revealed that Muhammadiyah has contributed over IDR 75 billion to Palestine, underlining the organization’s commitment to supporting the Palestinian people.
Mu’ti also emphasized that Muhammadiyah involvement goes beyond providing scholarships; it is a humanitarian effort and a means to showcase Indonesia to the world. He cited instances where international students, deeply impressed by their experiences in Indonesia, chose to remain in the country after completing their studies.
The Indonesian people are very hospitable. Some international students opt to stay rather than return to their home countries.
Muhammadiyah’s commitment to education aligns with its broader international mission, encompassing humanitarian aid, peace promotion, cultural understanding, and advocacy for social justice.
