Eid al-Fitr in Garung: Where Nature Meets Faith

MUHAMMADIYAH.OR.ID, GARUNG – Performing Eid al-Fitr prayer in an open field is common for Muhammadiyah people, but doing so while surrounded by breathtaking mountain scenery makes the experience even more special.

On Monday, March 31,  thousands of people gathered at Garung Butuh Field in Kalikajar District, Wonosobo, to celebrate Eid al-Fitr. The location, nestled between Mount Sumbing and Mount Sindoro, not only provided a serene atmosphere for prayer but also attracted visitors from outside the region.

“This area is on the slopes of Mount Sumbing, offering beautiful views, especially when seen from a higher vantage point. The combination of worship and nature creates a truly unique experience,” said Wachid, Chairperson of the Muhammadiyah Branch (PCM) of Kalikanjar, Garung Butuh.

In addition to its scenic setting, Garung’s proximity to the Mount Sumbing hiking trail made it an appealing destination for those who wanted to combine their holiday with outdoor activities. Wachid noted that social media and the growing interest in nature-based experiences contributed to the increasing number of visitors.

To manage the large turnout, different Muhammadiyah branches took turns organizing the event. “This year, the Al Mansur branch was in charge. We prepared not only the prayer field but also accommodations, including homestays,” explained Wachid.

With more visitors than usual, lodging quickly filled up. To accommodate the overflow, residents opened their homes, and Muhammadiyah facilities like mosques and Islamic boarding schools provided additional space.

“Since homestays couldn’t fit everyone, many locals welcomed guests into their homes,” added Wachid.

Garung is also known for its cool climate and local specialties. Visitors had the chance to enjoy its signature coffee, a highlight for those exploring the area.

As more people choose Garung for their Eid al-Fitr celebrations, Wachid hoped the community would continue to improve its hospitality.

“We want to provide even better services so visitors feel comfortable, especially as the number of people performing Eid  prayer there keeps growing,” he said.
