The Muhammadiyah family is mourning the passing of the Chairperson of the Council for Religious Opinion and Reform of Muhammadiyah Central Board, Hamim Ilyas. He passed away on Saturday (23/5) at approximately 01:40 a.m. WIB at RSA UGM, Yogyakarta.
The late scholar had previously undergone treatment at the hospital for around ten days. However, after briefly returning home, his condition deteriorated again, and readmitted on Wednesday (20/5).
President of Muhammadiyah, Haedar Nashir, stated that Muhammadiyah has lost a distinguished ulama, intellectual, and Muslim scholar known for his profound knowledge, calm demeanor, and humility. One of Prof. Hamim Ilyas’ significant contribution was the concept of Tauhid Rahamutiyah. This concept became an important theological framework within the development of Islam Berkemajuan (Progressive Islam) in Muhammadiyah.
Tauhid Rahamutiyah is an Islamic theological concept emphasizing that Allah the Almighty, the One and Only God, possesses mercy (rahmah) as His essential attribute.
“The idea places transformative compassion at the core of faith and righteous deeds,” Haedar further explained on Saturday (23/5).
Within this perspective, all of Allah’s creation and divine laws are to bring about public welfare, social justice, peace, and the well-being of humanity. Therefore, Islamic teachings should not remain confined to conceptual understanding and ritual practice alone. It should be manifested in concrete actions that benefit society.
“The Central Board of Muhammadiyah expresses its deepest condolences over the passing of the late Prof. Hamim Ilyas. May Allah SWT accept all of his good deeds, forgive his shortcomings, and grant him a place in jannatun na’im,” Haedar said.
Haedar also shared the information when he visited the late scholar together with the President Director of PKU Muhammadiyah Hospitals. Dr. Komar and Dr. Faisol, on Thursday (21/5), stated that Prof. Hamim’s condition no longer allowed direct communication.
“Everyone had done their utmost effort, but Allah has determined his appointed time. We must let him go sincerely,” Haedar concluded.
He also prayed that the bereaved family would be granted strength, patience, and perseverance in facing this loss.
