MUHAMMADIYAH.OR.ID, SLEMAN – Chairperson of the Muhammadiyah Council for Cadre and Human Resources (MPKSDI) Bachtiar Dwi Kurniawan emphasized that Muhammadiyah is a da’wa movement, promoting amar ma’ruf nahi munkar (good deeds and forbidding wrongdoings), and a renewal and progressive movement.
Stemming from its identity as a movement for renewal and progress, Muhammadiyah’s fundamental principle is fastabiqul khairat (competing in goodness). This renewal identity is further exemplified by Muhammadiyah approach to religious texts, which incorporates science.
“Muhammadiyah has a scientific and methodical approach to religion. This makes practicing religion with knowledge easier, more certain, and more precise,” said Bachtiar in a preaching at Masjid K.H. Sudja’ of RS PKU Muhammadiyah Gamping, Sleman on Monday (July 14).
According to Muhammadiyah, Islam is not merely a system of beliefs; it is a faith that must be translated into action. Bachtiar emphasized that true faith requires not only internal belief and verbal expression but also concrete actions that benefit society.
“This concept is comprehensive Kaffah Islam, which emphasizes maintaining a balance between habluminallah (a good relationship with God) and good relationships with the environment, fellow human beings, and society as a whole,” said Bachtiar.
As a movement that upholds the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad, Muhammadiyah also consistently adheres to the Prophet’s sunnah (practices). However, Bachtiar pointed out that what distinguishes Muhammadiyah from others in its implementation of the sunnah is its emphasis on substance over mere form.
Even in matters of piety, Muhammadiyah recognizes the existence of both individual piety and social piety. This means that achieving spiritual well-being goes beyond personal devotion. It also involves contributing to the betterment of society as a whole. Muhammadiyah believes that the benefits of Islamic teachings extend not only to individuals but also contribute to the progress and well-being of society as a whole.
