MUHAMMADIYAH.OR.ID, JAKARTA – Indonesia aspires to regain self-sufficiency in rice production. To achieve the goal, Chairperson of Muhammadiyah Anwar Abbas addressed the importance of well-planned land management.
Anwar Abbas pointed out a concerning trend that rapid development is leading to the conversion of green zones (designated for agriculture) into yellow zones (urban development). This shift in land use, particularly prevalent in urban areas, is happening at a pace that often leaves communities with little say.
“We want Indonesia to be independent when it comes to feeding its people,” said Anwar Abbas at the Muhammadiyah Day celebration conducted by Rumah Sakit Islam Jakarta Cempaka Putih on Tuesday (July 16).
He warned that continued conversion of agricultural land jeopardizes national food security and increases reliance on imports.
The issue is especially pressing in Jakarta’s outskirts. Driven by population growth and limited housing options, these areas, once earmarked for agriculture, are transforming into residential zones. Anwar Abbas urged the government to address this problem swiftly and decisively to prevent further development-related conflicts.
Population growth is not the sole culprit. Unscrupulous practices by large investors, who prioritize profit over fair development, also contribute to the shift away from agricultural land. Anwar Abbas believes Indonesia needs leaders who act as statesmen, prioritizing long-term national interests over the benefit of specific groups.
In essence, Anwar Abbas’ message is a call for responsible land-use planning and leadership focused on securing food security of Indonesia for the future. To achieve and maintain self-sufficiency in rice and other staples, the country must prioritize protecting its vital agricultural lands.
