An opportunity has emerged for Muhammadiyah to collaborate with the Egyptian Red Crescent (ERC) in delivering aid to Palestinians during the upcoming Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr.
The offer, presented by ERC representative Mrs. Amira on February 5th, comes at a crucial time as winter coincides with these significant Islamic holidays, further amplifying the challenges faced by Palestinians.
The Egyptian government has entrusted the Ministry of Health and ERC with the responsibility of managing aid distribution from various countries and organizations. Leveraging this authority, ERC has established clear procedures for the responsible delivery of humanitarian assistance.
Mrs. Amira emphasized that organizations partnering with ERC must adhere to specific guidelines. Notably, ERC only accepts collaboration in the form of providing goods and facilitating aid distribution, excluding the deployment of personnel.
“Therefore, organizations cannot send volunteers unless they are Egyptian citizens,” said Mrs. Amira.
Naibul Umam, coordinator of the Emergency Medical Team (EMT) of Muhammadiyah, expressed his enthusiasm about the potential partnership.
“This invitation is truly an honor, especially considering it comes from an organization with extensive experience in delivering humanitarian aid to Palestine,” he said. “We are deeply grateful for this opportunity and will definitely recommend it to the Muhammadiyah Central Board for further consideration.”
It’s important to remember that the 51.5-ton aid shipment sent by the Indonesian government last year, containing essential items like food, medical supplies, and tents, was managed with the assistance of ERC. In its operations, ERC collaborates closely with UNRWA and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) through the Rafah border crossing.
Several other non-governmental organizations, including the Indonesian Humanitarian Alliance (IHA) and the Indonesian Red Cross (PMI), have also partnered with ERC to deliver aid.
The ERC’s role in Palestinian aid distribution is crucial, with various international humanitarian organizations, including those from Indonesia, coordinating with them to ensure efficient and responsible delivery. Notably, the Indonesian government’s aid shipment received in November 2023 was managed through ERC channels.
Representatives from the EMT Muhammadiyah, accompanied by the Secretary of the Muhammadiyah Department for the Zakat, Infaq, and Shadaqah Management (Lazismu) and the Muhammadiyah Special Branch (PCIM) of Egypt, had the privilege of meeting with ERC representatives Mrs. Amira and Dr. Nadia to discuss the proposed collaboration.
This potential partnership between Muhammadiyah and ERC holds immense promise for alleviating the hardships faced by Palestinians during the upcoming holiday season. As the details are finalized, we eagerly await the positive impact this collaboration will bring to those in need.
