MUHAMMADIYAH.OR.ID, YOGYAKARTA – The Chairperson of the Main Board of Muhammadiyah, Agus Taufiqurrahman, told the importance of the development of Muhammadiyah-’Aisyiyah Hospital to be excellent, progressive, and beneficial to the wider community.
Agus recalled words of the late President of the Main Board of Muhammadiyah from 1968 to 1990 period, A.R. Fachruddin, when he was once asked by Professor Abdul Malik Fajar about cadre development and Muhammadiyah Social Enterprise advancement.
“When being asked by Prof. Abdul Malik Fajar about Muhammadiyah education system and Muhammadiyah social enterprise development, AR Fachruddin explained that Muhammadiyah is essentially aiming to create an Islam that is advanced, progressive, even Islam that is nyah-nyoh (generous in helping other),” said Agus.
He went on: “If Muhammadiyah builds a school, it must be an excellent one. If it builds a hospital, it must be an excellent one too. So that when people pass by and see Muhammadiyah, they admire and take pride in the Islamic mission it carries,” explained him at the 5th batch of Darul Arqam for the Board of Governance and Directors of Muhammadiyah-‘Aisyiyah Hospital across Indonesia, held on Wednesday (1/10)
Continuing his reflection, Agus explained how AR Fachruddin’s values were carried forward by Prof. Abdul Malik Fajar, proven by his effort of leading Muhammadiyah University of Malang to grow into one of the top three Muhammadiyah-’Aisyiyah universities and make it into the top 10 Islamic higher education institutions nationwide.
According to him, the story gave us a valuable lesson: the management of Muhammadiyah social enterprises, including hospitals, must be carried out with sincerity and seriousness so their benefits can reach a wider range. For this reason, he emphasized that Baitul Arqam should serve as a crucial moment of reflection and evaluation for the management of Muhammadiyah-’Aisyiyah Hospitals throughout Indonesia.
“Baitul Arqam is truly an opportunity for us to reflect on the journey and the current state of our hospitals. Lastly, the Council for Public Health together with Muhammadiyah’s Bureau for Organizational Management of the Main Board of Muhammadiyah have also been drafting new regulations for the development of our hospitals. Adjustments will always be needed, but one thing must remain unchanged, that is our hospitals’ distinctive service,” Agus concluded. (Bintang Adrian)
