MUHAMMADIYAH.OR.ID, YOGYAKARTA – The leadership of Muhammadiyah is calling for a more systematic approach to its core ideology. Bachtiar Dwi Kurniawan, Chairperson of Muhammadiyah Council for Cadre Development and Human Resources, emphasized that “Progressive Islamic Aqidah” must clearly be defined.
During Ramadan Sermon at the Muhammadiyah University of Yogyakarta (UMY) dormitory on Friday (20/2), he argued for a reflection on the organization’s identity. This movement rests on the foundation of pure monotheism, or tauhid. However, as the world becomes more complex, the organization needs a structured way to maintain its ideological integrity.
Kurniawan noted that while pure monotheism is a hallmark of Muhammadiyah members, the ideology lacks a complete, formal codification. “There is something striking in the process of planting Islamic and Muhammadiyah ideological understandings, which is that they have not been fully codified,” he stated. While pure monotheism remains a hallmark of members, the lack of formal documentation creates challenges. Consequently, these Ramadan sessions serve as a strategic effort to fill those conceptual voids. The leadership aims to turn lived values into a systematic framework. By doing so, they ensure that core beliefs remain consistent across a massive institutional network.
Strengthening the Chain of Leadership
The primary goal of this codification involves assisting the next generation of leaders. Kurniawan believes a structured ideology makes it easier to transmit values to activists. “Of course, this will also help us and the next generation to instill an understanding of Islam and Muhammadiyah to all leaders, activists, and cadres,” he added.
Without a clear manual, the essence of the movement might dilute over time. Therefore, the Council is working to create a roadmap for ideological training. This process ensures that every member understands the specific “progressive” nature of their faith.
Ultimately, the goal is to create a clear ideological guide for all activists. This clarity allows the organization to function more effectively in its various social and religious roles. By bridging the gap between historical values and future needs, Muhammadiyah secures its legacy. The formalization of the Progressive Islamic Creed represents a major step in the intellectual journey of the organization.
