The earth trembled in Sumedang, Indonesia, on the last day of 2023, leaving behind a trail of destruction. Buildings crumpled, forcing hundreds to flee their homes. Though the tremors have subsided, the aftermath of the 4.1-magnitude earthquake continues to impact lives. Amidst the hardship, acts of compassion and solidarity shine through, exemplified by the efforts of Muhammadiyah.
Muhammadiyah Disaster Management Center (MDMC) of Sumedang swiftly extended a helping hand. Led by Alfitriyanto, the MDMC coordination post head, they prioritized providing immediate shelter for displaced residents. Mass shelters, measuring 4 x 6 meters, were erected in seven strategic locations – Ketib, Cimuja, Kebon Kelapa, Jatimulya, Pasangrahan, Kampung Singaraja, and Kampung Patung.
These tents serve as a safe haven for families during the night, allowing them to return to their daily routines during the day while minimizing concerns about aftershocks or potential further damage to their homes. “We understand their anxieties,” Alfitriyanto explained, “and these mass shelters offer a temporary sense of security and normalcy.”
Recognizing the long-term impact of such disasters, MDMC of Sumedang is also looking beyond immediate needs. They are currently assessing the condition of schools in affected areas and collaborating with the government to determine the best way to ensure continued education for displaced children. Whether it’s establishing temporary schools or facilitating online learning, MDMC is committed to minimizing disruptions to their education.
Beyond shelter and education, MDMC of Sumedang, in partnership with the ‘Aisyiyah Clinic of Sumedang, has set up a medical shelter to provide essential healthcare services to the affected communities. This vital service ensures access to medical attention for injuries, illnesses, and emotional distress that may arise in the aftermath of the disaster.
The earthquake may have shaken the ground, but it hasn’t dampened the spirit of the Sumedang community. With organizations like Muhammadiyah stepping forward, offering unwavering support and practical solutions, the road to recovery is paved with hope and resilience. The mass shelters are more than just shelters; they are symbols of solidarity, reminding everyone that even in the face of adversity, compassion and collaboration can rebuild lives and communities.
