MUHAMMADIYAH.OR.ID, TERNATE – A severe flash flood struck Rua, Ternate, Maluku Utara on Sunday, August 25 at 3:30 local time, causing significant casualties and infrastructure damage. According to the latest situation report on August 27, the disaster has claimed the lives of 18 people, injured 15, and left three missing. Approximately 185 residents have been displaced from their homes.
The flash flood caused widespread destruction, including severe damage to 25 homes, one educational facility, and one place of worship.
The Muhammadiyah Disaster Management Center (MDMC) team has collaborated with the Ternate City Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) and the Maluku Utara Provincial BPBD to conduct rescue operations for those still trapped in the affected area. Most of the displaced residents have sought refuge with family members, while others have been accommodated in evacuation centers set up by the Ternate City BPBD.
The Maluku Utara Provincial BPBD has declared a state of emergency and established an emergency response post to coordinate further assistance. The MDMC team in Ternate have conducted a rapid assessment of the disaster’s impact and have assisted in preparing evacuation sites.
Logistical support was urgently needed to assist the displaced and ongoing rescue efforts. Essential items such as tents, light towers, blankets, mattresses, tarpaulins, folding beds, food, clean water, rescue equipment, and communal kitchen equipment were in high demand.
Relief efforts are continuing to provide maximum support to those affected by the flash flood. The public is encouraged to donate. Meanwhile, the government is calling on all residents in at-risk areas to stay alert and follow the advice of emergency responders.
