The Episcopal Conference of Indonesia and Muhammadiyah Agree on Religion as ‘A Sacred Canopy’

MUHAMMADIYAH.OR.ID, JAKARTA — Muhammadiyah thoughts have provided a sense of serenity and enlightenment to Muhammadiyah members, Muslims, and a wider society from diverse religious backgrounds.

President of Muhammadiyah Haedar Nashir mentioned that the friendship between the Muslims and Catholics is portrayed by the proximity of Jakarta Cathedral and Istiqlal Mosque and shared views for the development of this nation and the people.

“Muhammadiyah, along with other religious organizations, presents a religion as ‘a scared canopy’ guiding its believers and public in their social, national, and state lives,” said Haedar at the visit of Muhammadiyah to Jakarta Archdiocese on Friday (9/6).

According to Haedar, religion is a spiritual force that strengthens the nation’s souls. It also unifies individuals amidst their differences and maintains brotherhoods to promote peace in the diverse nation and state.

“In the Indonesian context, we have no history of separating religion from the state. We united to strive for independence and betterment. Therefore, it is inappropriate to label religion as the source of problems and radicalism due to actions of a few individuals,” said Haeadr, the Professor of Sociology.

Furthermore, the President of the Episcopal Conference of Indonesia Bishop Antonius Subianto Bunyamin appreciated Muhammadiyah education initiatives and expressed optimism that Muhammadiyah strategic roles would uphold the dignity of religion and strengthen people’s faith.

Indeed, as the upcoming 2014 General Elections, Muhammadiyah’s thoughts have the potential to instill calm amidst the intense political contests. It is essential for everyone to view the elections as a five-year political event that brings joy.

Cardinal Ignatius Suharyo Hardjoatmodjo also acknowledged the significance of the visit, highlighting the inclusiveness demonstrated by Muhammadiyah’s service institutions and prominent figures.

“We deeply appreciate Muhammadiyah’s enlightening thoughts, which benefit all people,” said Cardinal Ignatius Suharyo Hardjoatmodjo.
