MUHAMMADIYAH.OR.ID, JAKARTA— The Coordinating Minister of Human Development and Culture and the Chairman of Muhammadiyah Muhadjir Effendy mentioned that Islamic culture has flourished long before Indonesia’s independence.
To reinterpret the Islamic culture, Muslims may grasp Peter L. Berger’s dialectic theory that the Almighty God creates humans with creativity which becomes the essence of culture.
“Humans require ideas and media to coin something. Ideas refer to what’s on my mind, while media are what exists in this world. Both will determine the image of our culture,” said Muhadjir in the national seminar on ‘Strengthening the Role of Indonesian Islamic Culture in Uniting the Nation’ organized by the Institute of Arts, Culture, and Islamic Civilization of the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) at Sasana Kriya Taman Mini Indonesia Indah, Jakarta, on Wednesday (July 26).
According to Muhadjir Effendy, Indonesian Islam acquires its distinctiveness through the influence of local media and ideas, setting it apart from Islam in other countries.
The uniqueness of Indonesian Islam deserves recognition, as it enriches the country’s cultural diversity. For example, a transformative hijab phenomenon has become an extraordinary symbol, significantly impacting Indonesia’s textile industry and the overall economy.
Muhadjir Effendy hoped that Indonesian Islamic culture would garner international recognition, contributing to advancing a new global civilization.
