Muhammadiyah Takes Global Stand: Climate Forum Set for November

MUHAMMADIYAH.OR.ID, JAKARTA – Muhammadiyah has expanded its global roles in various fields, including climate change. To address the issue, this movement is gearing up for the Global Forum for Climate Movement in Yogyakarta on November 16, 2023.

The event is a follow-up to the results of the 48th Congress (Muktamar) of Muhammadiyah in Surakarta in 2022, in which one of the discussed issues was the environment.

Chairman of the Muhammadiyah Anwar Abbas emphasized the forum’s urgency to catalyze collective action. He sees the global warming challenge not merely as an environmental concern but as a clash of values and the prevailing economic systems.

“The current imbalance in ecosystems, driven by the dominance of liberalism and capitalism, has fostered a culture of profit-seeking that often disregards environmental sustainability,” said Anwar Abbas.

The forum will address three key aspects: alternative philosophies to counter the destructive impacts of capitalism; evaluation of industrial and government practices lacking environmental foresight; and raising awareness, fostering cooperation, and bolstering civil society’s role in mitigating global warming.

“We are committed to moving beyond discussions, focusing on practical actions to reduce poverty and mitigate the effects of global warming,” said Anwar Abbas.

The forum signifies a significant milestone for Muhammadiyah in leading environmental and civil society movements towards sustainability. The movement invites all segments of society to join this transformative initiative.

“With the strong initiatives and leadership, there is hope for reshaping our future and revitalizing our beloved earth,” said Anwar Abbas.
