MUHAMMADIYAH.OR.ID, YOGYAKARTA – One of Muhammadiyah crucial meetings is “Tanwir”. It is the Muhammadiyah national meeting, conducted at least three times during a leadership term of the Central Board of Muhammadiyah.
According to Muhammadiyah bylaws, “Tanwir” refers to a national meeting under the authority of the Muhammadiyah Congress (Muktamar Muhammadiyah).
The term “Tanwir,” which means “enlightenment,” was first officially used in 1932 when Muhammadiyah was led by K.H. Hisyam. Originally known as Madjlis Tanwir, Tanwir was one of the decisions of Conferentie Consul Hoofdbestuur Moehammadijah Hindia-Timoer in Yogyakarta conducted on November 19-22, 1932). The term “Tanwir”, then, was officially announced in the 24th Congress (Muktamar) of Muhammadiyah in Banjarmasin in 1935.
The Tanwir national meeting is attended by Muhammadiyah members, including members of the Central Board; chairpersons and deputy chairpersons of the Provincial board; chairpersons of the central autonomous organizations; two representatives of Muhammadiyah councils, departments, and bureaus; invited guests; and Tanwir observers.
While members have the right to express opinions, vote, and be elected, observers and guests can only express their opinions.
Regarding the Tanwir agenda, it includes the report presentation by the Central Board, discussions on issues delegated to the Tanwir by the Congress or the bylaws, preliminary discussions on issues to be discussed at the next Congress, urgent issues that cannot be postponed until the next Congress, and recommendations from the members.
