Ahead of Its 49th Congress, Muhammadiyah Prepares Treatise of Universality

Kiai Saad Ibrahim, Chairperson of the Central Board of Muhammadiyah

EN.MUHAMMADIYAH.OR.ID, JAKARTA – As Muhammadiyah prepares for its 49th National Congress in Medan in 2027, the Central Board is drafting a document known as the Treatise of Universality.

Saad Ibrahim, Chairperson of the Muhammadiyah Central Board, revealed the plan during the Muhammadiyah Central Board religious sermon at the Muhammadiyah Dakwah Center in Jakarta on Friday (28/8).

According to Saad, the Treatise of Universality is a logical consequence of Muhammadiyah’s growing commitment to internationalization. The effort to expand the reach of its Islamic movement also represents an effort to continue the Prophet’s dakwah.

Saad noted that Islam was never intended solely for the Arabian Peninsula. The spirit of spreading Islam beyond its place of origin had existed since the time of Prophet Muhammad himself.

He pointed to two early waves in the spread of Islam beyond Makkah. First is the migration of Prophet Muhammad and his followers. Second is the migration of Uthman ibn Affan to Abyssinia.

“Therefore, this is an effort to build patriotism and to take part in the international sphere,” he said.

“So, when Muhammadiyah seeks to build a spirit and a sense of patriotism for internationalization, it is a logical and inevitable consequence,” he added.

Saad said Muhammadiyah’s internationalization can be pursued through both structural and cultural approaches. This is particularly important in countries where Muslims are minorities. By doing so, the light of Islam can be experienced by more people around the world.
