EN.MUHAMMADIYAH.OR.ID, SURABAYA – Drawing lessons from the Battle of Uhud, Kiai Saad Ibrahim, Chairperson of the Muhammadiyah Central Board, urged Muslims to uphold obedience, fulfill their responsibilities, and maintain their spirit of struggle.
He delivered the message on Sunday (25/10) during the Kajian Ahad Pagi Pencerahan organized by the Surabaya City Muhammadiyah Regional Board. The event took place at the SD Muhammadiyah 15 Wiyung complex in Surabaya.
Kiai Saad explained that the Battle of Uhud was one of the most significant battles in the history of Islam. In the battle, 1,000 Muslim soldiers faced an army of 3,000 Quraysh fighters.
One of the most memorable moments came when a group of archers disobeyed the Prophet’s orders. They were tempted by the spoils of war left behind. Although victory seemed close, their greed contributed to the Muslim army’s defeat.
Nevertheless, the Prophet and his companions did not lose their fighting spirit after the defeat. For Muslims, he said, defeat must not extinguish their determination, while victory must never lead to arrogance.
“Both circumstances must be faced with faith, steadfastness, and a willingness to keep improving ourselves,” he said.
Turning Faith into Meaningful Action
Referring to Surah Ali Imran, verse 139, Kiai Saad explained that a sense of pride should be rooted in faith. Pride grounded in faith, he said, does not lead people to consider themselves superior to others.
He therefore encouraged Muhammadiyah members to cultivate pride rooted in the values of faith and expressed through concrete work.
“Such pride must be reflected in consistently doing good, developing programs, and upholding our commitment to the goals of Muhammadiyah as an organization,” he said.
For Muhammadiyah, pride must go beyond symbolic identity. Being Muslim and being part of Muhammadiyah must be reflected in faith, trustworthiness, productivity, and tangible contributions to the Muslim community and humanity as a whole.
