MUHAMMADIYAH.OR.ID, YOGYAKARTA – Haedar Nashir, President of Muhammadiyah, recently highlighted the transformative potential of Islam as an alternative culture or civilization. His emphasis lies in the necessity for nuanced approaches in presenting an alternative civilization, aligning with the essence of progressive Islam.
Haedar delineated five key features characterizing progressive Islam, encompassing Tawhid (Oneness of God), a return to the Qur’an and Sunnah (traditions of Prophet Muhammad), revitalizing Ijtihad (independent reasoning), promoting Wasathiyah (moderation), and embodying the essence of being a mercy to the worlds.
Exploring the concept of Tawhid, Haedar underlined its foundational role in the beliefs of all Islamic factions and individual Muslims. He stressed that Tawhid, emphasizing the belief in the oneness of Allah, is not just a fundamental principle but a duty that each Muslim must embrace.
For Muhammadiyah, Haedar elucidated that the implications of Tawhid extend beyond personal faith, impacting social life and the broader universe. It involves the dignification of humanity, the elevation of individual status, and enlightenment through compassionate preaching, guiding individuals towards the righteous path and steering clear of deviations.
Haedar delved into the second characteristic, the return to the Qur’an and Sunnah. He clarified that, according to Muhammadiyah’s perspective, this return goes beyond a mere textual interpretation. Instead, it encompasses a comprehensive understanding that includes logic, knowledge, and technology, all integral to interpreting the Qur’an and Sunnah.
Ijtihad, as the third characteristic, involves the incorporation of new elements or the formulation of legal decisions not explicitly found in religious texts. Haedar illustrated how Ijtihad opens the door for renewal movements, citing historical examples like Kiai Dahlan’s initiatives in correcting the Qibla’s direction, establishing modern schools, and hospitals.
Wasathiyah, the fourth characteristic, denotes moderation in religious practices, avoiding extremist tendencies. Haedar clarified that moderation doesn’t imply a lack of opinion but rather emphasizes the development of ideas through thorough study and understanding.
Lastly, Haedar discussed the importance of embodying the quality of being a mercy to the worlds. He emphasized the need for Islam to extend its compassionate principles globally, drawing parallels with the illuminating reach of sunlight across the universe.
In essence, Haedar’s perspective underscores Muhammadiyah’s commitment to fostering an Islam that not only serves as a spiritual guide but also contributes to progressive societal development on a global scale.
