MUHAMMADIYAH.OR.ID, LIBYA — Amidst the devastation wrought by the catastrophic Libyan floods of September 2023, a beacon of hope shines through a vital partnership. Muhammadiyah and Hilal Ahmar Libya, the country’s Red Crescent society, have joined forces to offer a lifeline to families grappling with the aftermath.
The deluge, unleashed by torrential rains and exacerbated by a compromised dam, claimed the lives of over 15,000 individuals and displaced countless others. This compounded the existing humanitarian crisis gripping Libya, with a desperate food shortage already plaguing the nation.
Recognizing the immense need, Muhammadiyah, through its dedicated humanitarian arm Lazismu, swiftly mobilized a fundraising campaign. Their unwavering commitment yielded over IDR10 billion, paving the way for a comprehensive response.
Lazismu then forged a strategic partnership with Hilal Ahmar Libya, leveraging their extensive local network and expertise to facilitate aid distribution. This collaborative effort culminated in a symbolic ceremony on Wednesday, December 13th, 2023, at the Hilal Ahmar Tripoli warehouse. Representatives from both organizations and the Indonesian Embassy in Tripoli graced the occasion, underscoring the collaborative spirit underpinning the intervention.
“Nearly 300 families of survivors residing in Tripoli received crucial support,” stated Ahmad Najirulloh Siregar, coordinator of the PCIM Libya Emergency Response Team. The meticulously planned distribution embraced a two-pronged approach. Families equipped with adequate transport and family arrangements could collect aid directly at the warehouse, ensuring efficient access. For those facing mobility constraints, Hilal Ahmar Libya stepped in, delivering essential supplies directly to their doorsteps.
This unwavering commitment to inclusivity is a cornerstone of Muhammadiyah’s humanitarian philosophy. They recognize that hardship wears many faces, and their approach strives to address each with sensitivity and effectiveness.
Prior to this on-ground engagement, a symbolic ceremony on November 10th, 2023, saw Lazismu Chairman Ahmad Imam Mujadid Rais present a generous donation to Zubair Burhanuddin, representing the PCIM Libya. This initial gesture served as a catalyst for the subsequent joint operation, showcasing the unwavering determination to alleviate the suffering of those affected.
The Muhammadiyah-Hilal Ahmar Libya partnership stands as a testament to the enduring power of cooperation in the face of adversity. Their united efforts have provided a vital lifeline to hundreds of families reeling from the flood’s devastation, offering them a glimmer of hope amidst the rubble. Beyond immediate relief, their collaboration lays the groundwork for long-term rebuilding efforts, empowering communities to reclaim their lives and chart a path towards a brighter future.
