MUHAMMADIYAH.OR.ID, YOGYAKARTA – Hydrometeorological disasters, including floods, landslides, and strong winds, continue to affect large parts of Indonesia, from Sumatra to eastern Java. As risks intensify, Muhammadiyah has called on its volunteer network to remain vigilant, particularly across Java, where threats are expected to persist.
Budi Setiawan, Chairperson of the Muhammadiyah Disaster Management Center (MDMC), urged Muhammadiyah volunteers and the broader public to maintain heightened preparedness amid ongoing emergencies.
Java Faces Heightened Risk as Volunteers Deployed Elsewhere
Budi noted that many Muhammadiyah volunteers remain deployed in disaster-affected areas in Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra. Consequently, he stressed the importance of redistributing responsibilities among volunteers in Java to ensure continued readiness.
“Today, I want to reinforce this message,” Budi said in a video statement received Monday (26/01), “MDMC volunteers and Muhammadiyah volunteers in Banten, West Java, Central Java, Yogyakarta, and east Java must remain alert and share tasks, as hydrometeorological disasters continue to threaten several regions in Java.”
He pointed to a recent major landslide in West Bandung Regency as a reminder of the region’s vulnerability. Therefore, he called on volunteers in West Java to remain actively engaged in local disaster response efforts.
“To our fellow volunteers in West Bandung, Bandung Regency, and surrounding areas, I ask you to work hand in hand with other institutions to help our brothers and sisters affected by disaster,” he said.
Similar conditions, he added, continue to affect Banten where emergency response remains necessary.
Coastal and Wind-Prone Areas Under Watch
Budi also extended his warning to Central Java and East Java, especially along the northern coastal areas, where flooding remains a strong possibility. Meanwhile, Yogyakarta has recently experienced severe winds that resulted in fatalities.
“For that reason,” he said, “MDMC volunteers must stay on standby, mobilize personnel and resources, and collaborate with all elements of society to assist communities impacted by disaster.”
The message underscores Muhammadiyah’s continued commitment to disaster preparedness and community resilience amid escalating climate-related risks. (janu)
