MUHAMMADIYAH.OR.ID, TAICHUNG – Chairperson of the Council for Cadre and Human Resources (MPKSDI) of Muhammadiyah Central Board (PP Muhammadiyah), Bachtiar Dwi Kurniawan, delivered the Friday prayer sermon at Asia University, Taichung, Taiwan, on Friday (31/10), addressing Indonesian diaspora students and the international Muslim community.
In his sermon, Bachtiar emphasized the importance of steadfast faith, integrity, and a progressive spirit, urging students to embody these values as representatives of Indonesia and Muhammadiyah abroad.
He reminded that seeking knowledge is a sacred duty for every Muslim, quoting the Prophet’s message encouraging lifelong learning even to distant land.
“Seeking knowledge is an obligation, from the cradle to the grave, even if it takes you as far as to China,” he said.
Bachtiar acknowledged the challenges faced by Indonesian students overseas, from living far from family to adapting to new academic and social environments.
“As diaspora students, you must learn to be independent. In a foreign land, everything must be faced on your own before a strong social circle forms. Homesickness is natural, but it’s part of your maturity test,” he said.
Beyond independence, he also warned about social temptations and academic pressures that could distract students from their real purpose.
“Cultural differences can cause a cultural shock, and academic demands can be tough. But you must remain steadfast as ambassadors of your nation and of Muhammadiyah in Taiwan,” he urged.
Bachtiar called on diaspora students to preserve both faith and national identity amid the pressures of overseas life.
“Academic and social challenges must never weaken your faith or sense of nationalism. Both must stay strong within you,” he affirmed.
He also highlighted the importance of cross-cultural brotherhood within the framework of Islam Berkemajuan (Progressive Islam).
“Amid Taiwan’s cultural and religious diversity, the spirit of ukhuwah Islamiyah (Islamic brotherhood) should unite the ummah. We are one in faith, one in struggle, and one in building peace,” he said.
Bachtiar underlined that Progressive Islam can bridge differences to create global harmony, while reminding students to uphold Indonesia’s and Muhammadiyah’s reputation internationally.
He concluded by urging the students to transform their overseas experience into a contribution to national development.
“When you return home, bring with you the knowledge and wisdom you’ve gained abroad to help advance our nation,” he said passionately.
The sermon, attended by dozens of Indonesian students and local Muslims, was part of Bachtiar’s visit to Taiwan to strengthen the Muhammadiyah diaspora community and promote Progressive Islam in East Asia.
“Taiwan is a new field of da’wah. Let us embody Islam as mercy for all creation (rahmatan lil ‘alamin)” he concluded.
The event concluded with a joint prayer that reinforced bonds of brotherhood among Muslim students at Asia University, marking a significant milestone in Muhammadiyah’s internationalization and its mission to build a progressive Islamic civilization in Asia. (Bintang Adrian)
