Muhammadiyah and Indonesian Football: Abdul Hamid BKN, PSSI Founder and Student of Kiai Ahmad Dahlan

MUHAMMADIYAH.OR.ID, YOGYAKARTA – The Secretary of the Department of Sports Development of Muhammadiyah Central Board (LPO PP Muhammadiyah), Fajar Junaedi, stated during a podcast on TVMU Jogja that the founder of Football Association of Indonesia (PSSI) was a Muhammadiyah cadre and a student of Kiai Ahmad Dahlan.

Quoting President Sukarno’s famous words, “Jas Merah” (Never Forget History), Fajar emphasized the importance of remembering Muhammadiyah’s contributions to the nation, particularly in the field of football, through the figure of Abdul Hamid BKN.

The Communication Science lecturer at Muhammadiyah University of Yogyakarta explained that Abdul Hamid BKN was the first treasurer of PSSI, and one of the key figures involved in its establishment. He stressed that this part of history must not be forgotten by Muhammadiyah cadre.

“Never forget the history. The first treasurer of PSSI was Mr. Abdul Hamid BKN. He also once served as one of the leaders of Muhammadiyah Central Board,” Fajar said during the podcast uploaded on Saturday (4/10).

Meanwhile, the Muhammadiyah Encyclopedia Vol. I, page 76, notes that Abdul Hamid BKN was a cadre and direct disciple of Kiai Ahmad Dahlan together with KR H. Hajid, H. Sujak, H.M. Mochtar, H. Wasool Jakfar, and others who were part of Fathul Asrar wa Miftahus Sa’adah (FAMS).

His dedication and contribution to Indonesian football were later continued by his son, Muhammad Dasron Hamid, who shared his father’s passion for the sport. Dasron Hamid served as Chairman of PSIM Yogyakarta for three consecutive terms.

“All loyal supporters of the Laskar Mataram (predicate for PSIM fans) surely know this history, especially those who experienced PSIM glory during the 1990s to the early 2000s,” said Fajar Junaedi. (Bintang Adrian)
