MUHAMMADIYAH.OR.ID, JAKARTA – Indonesia’s demographics are estimated to grow by 1% each year. If the current population reaches 275 million people, twenty-five years from now Indonesia’s population could be more than 300 million.

The growth brings challenges to meeting energy needs, food needs, jobs, and decent housing. In accordance with the concept of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the issues were discussed at the 48th Congress (Muktamar) of Muhammadiyah and ‘Aisyiyah in Surakarta in November 2022.

In the 94th edition of the Gerakan Subuh Mengaji of the third year of the Regional Board of Muhammadiyah of West Java on Thursday (2/2), Chair of the Muhammadiyah Wisdom and Public Policy Board, Yono Reksoprodjo said SDGs had been adjusted in the vision of Muhammadiyah 2022-2027 having the slogan “Muhammadiyah Unggul Berkemajuan” (Excellent Progressive Muhammadiyah).

“We have discussed essential aspects in SDGs. Of the 17 SDGs, Muhammadiyah is included in the expanded impact category. This movement has focused on nine issues transformed in six programs, namely poverty alleviation, health services, women’s empowerment, education for all, economic improvement, and environmental preservation,” he mentioned.

In principle, SDGs are to maintain the quality of human life so that it does not decline amid new challenges. Even though Muhammadiyah programs have been in accordance with SDGs, it’s still necessary to promote Muhammadiyah programs next five years.

“Muhammadiyah people should understand well that what this movement has been done leads to the SDGs,” he said.

Muhammadiyah programs are also in line with the vision of “Mencerahkan Semesta” (Enlightening the Universe) as the theme of the congress (muktamar) of Muhammadiyah. Therefore, roles in SDGs are strengthened so that Muhammadiyah can expand its programs globally.

“The goal of sustainable Islam emphasizes organizational goals to contribute to many areas such as global services, humanity, and inclusivity,” he mentioned.

Indeed, the focus of the Muhammadiyah in the next five years according to the Decree of the 48th Congress (Muktamar) of Muhammadiyah 2022 is as follows:

  1. creating a movement system transformation that is advanced, professional, and modern and has strong bases in the era of globalization and the information technology revolution,
  2. developing the quality, function, and role of the organization, leadership, and members as subjects of the movement amid the dynamics of the people, nation, and humanity,
  3. elevating excellent, independent, and synergistic charities and businesses that are evenly distributed in various parts of the country and abroad through public services and quality standards,
  4. expanding international relations and cooperation and broadening internationalization programs.
