MUHAMMADIYAH.OR.ID, PONOROGO – Chairman of Muhammadiyah Syafiq Mughni explained Islam’s compatibility with progress and its remarkable historical achievements.

Syafiq emphasized that Islam, far from being a hindrance to advancement, is a religion that inherently guides its followers towards prosperity in both this world and the hereafter. He urged Muslims to wholeheartedly embrace and implement Islamic teachings, recognizing their transformative power in fostering societal progress.

“A proper understanding of Islam is half the battle towards progress. When we translate this understanding into sincere practice, the results are undeniable. History bears witness to Islam’s glorious past, a period when it reigned supreme across the globe,” said Syafiq at a public lecture at Universitas Muhammadiyah Ponorogo on Sunday (June 23).

Syafiq recounted the remarkable conquests of Islam, highlighting the subjugation of the once-mighty Roman and Persian empires. He further delved into Islam’s golden age of knowledge, a time when renowned universities and magnificent cities flourished across the Islamic world, particularly in the Middle East, epitomized by Baghdad.

“While London remained mired in mud and Paris shrouded in darkness, Islamic cities like Baghdad, Cairo, and Cordoba sparkled with brilliance. These hubs of learning attracted scholars and students from far and wide, eager to quench their thirst for knowledge.”

Syafiq highlighted the historical evidence that Islam becomes a catalyst for societal advancement. He stressed the importance of Muslims diligently studying and implementing Islamic teachings, emphasizing that neglecting this duty paves the way for regression.

“The decline of the Muslim world can be attributed not only to external factors but also to internal shortcomings, particularly a lack of emphasis on education and technological advancement,” said Syafiq.

While acknowledging the significance of knowledge, Syafiq cautioned against its sole reliance as a driver of progress. He emphasized the pivotal role of morality, asserting, “The progress of a nation hinges upon its moral compass. The rise and fall of civilizations are inextricably linked to morality.”

Syafiq’s address became a powerful reminder of Islam’s rich legacy of progress and its inherent potential to guide humanity towards a brighter future. He implored Muslims to embrace the religion’s teachings wholeheartedly, recognizing their transformative power in shaping a more prosperous and virtuous world.
