EN.MUHAMMADIYAH.OR.ID, KULON PROGO – Muhammadiyah members are allowed to pursue any profession or path in life. But one principle, according to Muhammadiyah leaders, should remain firm: They must strive to know Islam well and deepen that understanding.
For the Central Board of Muhammadiyah, dr. Agus Taufiqurrahman, Islam is not merely a textual religion contained in the Quran for people to read. Rather, it offers comprehensive guidance for human life.
“But if we fail to know Islam well, we will not find Allah’s paradise. So whatever we become, we must always strive to understand Islam well,” he said Sunday (6/8) during the regular Sapa Jamaah Ahad Pagi session in Kulon Progo.
Religious Study as a Lifelong Need
For Muhammadiyah members, therefore, studying Islam through religious sermons is a necessity. Such gatherings serve not only as spaces to strengthen fellowship but also as opportunities to deepen one’s understanding of Islam.
Throughout Muhammadiyah’s long history, religious sermons have served as a vital link connecting the movement and sustaining its spirit. Through religious study sessions, both cadres and sympathizers have maintained the depth of their commitment to Islam and Muhammadiyah
It is therefore no exaggeration, Agus said, to describe religious sermon as the spirit of Muhammadiyah’s dakwah. From the era of Kiai Ahmad Dahlan to the present, religious study gatherings have provided a space for members to internalize Muhammadiyah’s values and teachings.
Agus also urged Muhammadiyah leaders to actively guide members and congregations in their respective communities. Religious study sessions that become especially lively during Ramadan, he said, should continue until the next Ramadan.
Religious study within Muhammadiyah, he added, should also take into account the mad’u, or congregation. This allows the material to be tailored to the needs and circumstances of participants.
