MUHAMMADIYAH.OR.ID, YOGYAKARTA – Ahead of the 2024 elections, Muhammadiyah’s General Chairman, Haedar Nashir, emphasized the importance of democratic values such as honesty, trustworthiness, and magnanimity for both contestants and supporters.
Speaking during the TVMU program of “Reflection on the 2024 Elections” on Sunday, February 11, Haedar stressed the need for all involved parties to embrace a fair and sportsmanlike approach, preparing themselves for both victory and defeat. He underscored the significance of ensuring that the electoral process remains clean, ethical, and free from any form of misconduct.
Haedar further highlighted the responsibility of public officials, including those in the military, police, and government, to uphold patriotism, professionalism, and moral integrity while fulfilling their duties in overseeing the elections. He urged them to adhere to their constitutional obligations and play their part in maintaining the integrity of the electoral process.
Moreover, Haedar directed a message to the election organizers, urging bodies like the General Election Commission (KPU) and the Election Supervisory Board (Bawaslu) to uphold integrity and act as impartial referees. He emphasized the importance of their role in ensuring transparent and accountable elections, not only in the present but also for the future of the nation.
Reflecting on Indonesia’s electoral history, Haedar expressed hope that the upcoming 2024 elections would set a new standard of cleanliness, efficiency, and dignity, aligning with the nation’s laws and regulations. He cautioned against any deviations or violations of constitutional principles, which could potentially undermine the integrity of the electoral process and lead to undesirable outcomes.

Finally, Haedar called upon Indonesian citizens to fulfill their civic duty by participating in the electoral process responsibly. He discouraged abstention from voting, emphasizing that every vote cast is a vital expression of national responsibility. Haedar encouraged citizens to engage in the electoral process thoughtfully, peacefully, and in accordance with democratic principles, ensuring a fair and inclusive outcome that reflects the collective will of the people.
