Chair of the Muhammadiyah Council for Fatwa and Islamic Renewal Hamim Ilyas called for a shift in religious practice, emphasizing the need to move beyond mere rituals and actively contribute to building a just and equitable civilization.
“Faith isn’t just about seeking rewards or fearing hellfire,” Ilyas declared on Saturday, February 17. “It’s also about actively building a better world, a civilization where everyone thrives.” This call encourages Muslims to break free from a purely ritualistic approach to religion and embrace their responsibility to contribute to a more just and equitable society.
Drawing on the Quran message of rahmatan lil ‘alamin (mercy for all worlds), Ilyas emphasized the Islamic ideal of “hayah thayyibah,” a good and noble life for all. He cited verses from Surah An-Nahl verse 97, highlighting Islam’s emphasis on creating a peaceful, prosperous, and harmonious society.
This ideal, Ilyas explained, goes beyond the spiritual realm. According to Surah Al-Baqarah verse 62, it encompasses social development, economic well-being, and shared prosperity for all. He stressed the importance of translating religious teachings into tangible actions that contribute to building such a society.
His message resonated with the upcoming 31st Tarjih Congress, scheduled for February 23-25th. This gathering will serve as a platform to discuss crucial issues like developing a progressive understanding of Islamic principles, addressing contemporary challenges in waqf (religious endowments), and establishing a unified global Hijri calendar.
Ilyas expressed his hope for a smooth and productive congress, emphasizing its potential to generate insightful discussions and strategic decisions that can enhance the religious lives and social contributions of Muslims. The congress, he believes, is a crucial step towards achieving the ideal of a just and equitable civilization, one built on the foundation of faith and active participation in shaping a better world.
