MUHAMMADIYAH.OR.ID, JAKARTA – Fresh from receiving the prestigious Zayed Award for Human Fraternity, Muhammadiyah has set its sights on even higher altitudes. General Secretary of Muhammadiyah Abdul Mu’ti declared his organization’s unwavering commitment to building peace, not just within its own borders but across the globe.
This aspiration unfolded during a special ceremony celebrating both the Isra’ Mi’raj (the miraculous Night Journey and Ascension of the Prophet Muhammad) and the Zayed Award recognition. Held at the At Taufiq Mosque in South Jakarta, the event saw Mu’ti urging not only Muhammadiyah but also its fellow recipient, Nahdlatul Ulama (NU), to maintain their crucial roles as the “two wings of the Garuda,” the national symbol of Indonesia.
“Imagine,” Mu’ti declared, “both Muhammadiyah and NU, though positioned differently, like the right and left wings of the Garuda, working together in unison. With both wings flapping, our nation can soar even higher!”
Mu’ti’s words resonated with gratitude. He expressed his appreciation for the international support that propelled both Muhammadiyah and NU to the Zayed Award. He singled out former President Megawati Soekarnoputri for her championing of their cause.
Looking beyond the immediate celebration, Mu’ti proposed a bold idea: If the United Arab Emirates can honor peacebuilders with the Zayed Award, why can’t Indonesia establish its own “Soekarno Award,” named after the nation’s first president, renowned for his dedication to world peace?
“Bung Karno,” Mu’ti emphasized, “was not just the Father of our nation, but a global champion for peace. His legacy, including the establishment of world-renowned peace institutions, deserves recognition and continued inspiration.”
Mu’ti’s statement transcends mere award acceptance. It signifies a renewed commitment from Muhammadiyah to collaborate with organizations like NU and champion peacebuilding efforts worldwide. The Zayed Award stands as a testament to their past achievements, but it also serves as a powerful springboard for their future endeavors to promote understanding and harmony across the globe.
