MUHAMMADIYAH.OR.ID, YOGYAKARTA – Muhammadiyah Central Board (PP Muhammadiyah) Chairperson Irwan Akib congratulate the establishment of Muhammadiyah University of Teluk Bintuni (Unimutu), following the official decree confirming its formation.
Speaking on Monday (10/11) at the Muhammadiyah Central Office in Yogyakarta during a courtesy visit from students of Muhammadiyah Conservation Senior High School Manokwari, Irwan emphasized that the founding of Unimutu marks another step in Muhammadiyah’s mission to advance education for all.
“We hope that the presence of Unimutu in Papua will bring enlightenment, foster intelligence, and promote prosperity,” He said.
Unimutu joins the extensive network of Muhammadiyah-’Aisyiyah Universities (PTMA) across Indonesia, which have long been committed to expanding access to education and improving the nation’s human capital.
In the same occasion, Irwan, who oversees the fields of education, arts, culture, and sports within PP Muhammadiyah, also congratulate the establishment of Muhammadiyah Vocational School of Conservation in Manokwari.
He further underscored that Muhammadiyah’s educational initiatives in Papua are not limited to Muslim communities or settled foreigners, but are especially dedicated to serving Orang Asli Papua (OAP), the Indigenous Papuan.
“Muhammadiyah comes to enlighten everyone. We make no distinction between locals and migrants, and our mission is not one of Islamization,” Irwan asserted.
“Muhammadiyah’s mission is conservation and community welfare, to serve humanity, not to seek benefit for ourselves,” he continued.
Irwan also reminded that Muhammadiyah’s approach to education must be rooted in sustainability, not short-term goals.
“For example, if we plan to build a Muhammadiyah school focused on maritime studies, we must first conduct proper observation. The sea shouldn’t only be seen as a place to catch fish, it should inspire us to build something greater,” he concluded. (Bintang Adrian)
