MUHAMMADIYAH.OR.ID, YOGYAKARTA – Muhammadiyah, a large Indonesian Islamic movement, has committed to internationalizing its ideas, roles, and movement.
The Chairman of Muhammadiyah dr. Agus Taufiqurrahman mentioned that, first, the internationalization of ideas was undertaken through publishing a document of “A Treatise on Progressive Islam”, a Muhammadiyah life guidance. This movement also promotes moderate Islam and Islam as rahmatan lil ‘alamin (a mercy to the whole world).
“The internationalization of ideas aims to campaign peaceful Islam,” said dr. Agus on Thursday (September 21).
Second, to perform the internationalization of roles, Muhammadiyah plays active roles in global humanitarian actions, such as deploying the Muhammadiyah emergency medical team (EMT) to disaster-affected countries. In November 2023, Muhammadiyah will host a forum in Yogyakarta to address climate change.
“Muhammadiyah has a council for environmental preservation. We will organize a meeting to bring together stakeholders to discuss climate change issues and how to cope with them, in addition to discussing disaster management,” said dr. Agus.
Third, Muhammadiyah is expanding its movement by establishing Muhammadiyah special branches overseas. It currently has 30 branches.
“Besides, we have established a school in Melbourne, higher education and a school in Malaysia, and an early childhood education institution in Egypt. All of them are part of Muhammadiyah internationalization,” said Agus.
