MUHAMMADIYAH.OR.ID, MALAYSIA – An eighth-grade student from Muhammadiyah Junior High School 2 Yogyakarta (SMP Muhammadiyah 2 Yogyakarta) has earned international recognition after winning six medals at a global dance competition in Malaysia, further highlighting Indonesia’s growing presence in competitive performing arts.
Carlen Faiza Urlist, widely known as Carlen, claimed five gold medals and one silver medal at The 11th Miri International Dance Championship 2025, held at the Grand Ballroom of the Meritz Hotel in Miri, Sarawak. The competition was organized by Broadway Dance Studio and drew young dancers from several countries.
The achievement marked another milestone for the Muhammadiyah school system, as well as a moment of pride for Carlen’s family and teachers.
Encouraging Talent through Competition
Hidayati, the principal of SMP Muhammadiyah 2 Yogyakarta, said the achievement should inspire other students to continue developing their talents through competitive platforms.
“Competitions help students sharpen their abilities and build confidence,” she said on Tuesday (30/12). “They motivate children to achieve, both for themselves and for their schools. That is something to celebrate.”
Carlen’s mother, Heni Sulistyowati, also expressed gratitude for the smooth course of the competition and the results her daughter achieved. She noted that this was Carlen’s fourth international competition.
“We are happy that Carlen was able to represent Indonesia,” she said. “Alhamdulillah everything went well, and she helped bring honor to the country.”
Competing on an International Stage
At this year’s championship, Carlen competed in the Standard Ballroom Open category, performing Waltz, Tango, Quickstep, Slow Foxtrot, and Viennese Waltz. She also took part in the Latin Open, dancing Cha-Cha-Cha
The championship featured participants from Indonesia, China, Singapore, Malaysia, and the Philippines. Categories were divided by age group and choreography difficulty, with judges assessing both technique and performance quality.
Carlen’s success reflects Muhammadiyah’s broader educational approach, which emphasizes not only academic achievement but also the development of student’s talents and character. Through its schools, the organization continues to support young Indonesians in competing and excelling on the global stage. (Bhisma) (Translated by Bintang Adrian)
