Educational Transformation: IBM Bekasi Becomes University of Muhammadiyah Bekasi Karawang

MUHAMMADIYAH.OR.ID, BEKASI – Muhammadiyah Business Institute of Bekasi (IBM Bekasi) has officially transformed into Muhammadiyah University of Bekasi Karawang (UMBK). The change was marked by a formal launching ceremony held on Tuesday (30/12).

A Step in Muhammadiyah’s Broader Reform Agenda

Masyitoh Chusnan, a member of UMBK’s Board of Governance, said the transformation reflects Muhammadiyah’s long-standing identity as a movement of renewal and change.

“Muhammadiyah continues to evolve—to grow stronger and to enlighten the nation’s future generations.” Chusnan delivered the message during the sixth graduation ceremony of IBM Bekasi at the Grand Krakatau Ballroom in Jakarta.

She expressed hope that UMBK would serve as a platform for nurturing future national leaders. She also described the university as a moral pathway that upholds the dignity and values of the Muhammadiyah movement.

Congratulatory remarks were also delivered by Indonesia’s Minister of Primary and Secondary Education (Mendikdasmen), Abdul Mu’ti, who attended the launch. In a lighthearted comment, he reminded the audience that Bekasi should precede Karawang in the university’s name. Otherwise, he joked, it might be mistaken for the title of Chairil Anwar’s well-known 1948 poem, Karawang–Bekasi.

Ahmad Muttaqin, Secretary of the Higher Education, Research, and Development Council (Majelis Diktilitbang) of Muhammadiyah’s central board, noted that the sixth graduation marked the final commencement under the IBM Bekasi name. He further mentioned the transition demonstrates Muhammadiyah’s consistent commitment to quality education.

“Muhammadiyah seeks to provide the best centers of learning, where everyone has access to knowledge,” he said.

Toward a New Campus in Karawang

UMBK Rector Jaenudin also welcomed the transformation, calling it a historic milestone in expanding access to quality higher education. He explained that although the official launch took place on December 30, 2025, the ministerial decree approving the change had been issued earlier on October 7, 2025, by LLDIKTI Region IV.

After completing graduation administration and data migration, he said, the university plans to formally request approval to relocate its campus domicile from Bekasi City to Karawang Regency.

Construction of a four-story UMBK campus is currently underway in Karawang. Groundbreaking took place on December 20, 2025, with completion targeted for early September 2026. (Bintang Adrian)
