The funeral prayer (salat al-janazah) holds a significant place in Islamic worhsip. This prayer is done unlike the five daily prayers. It does not include bowing (ruku’) and prostration (sujud), sitting between prostrations, or the final tashahhud.
Instead, it is performed entirely while standing and consists of four takbirs rather than four rak’ahs. This is an act of ibadah mahdah (pure ritual worship). Therefore, its procedure must strictly follow authentic guidance derived from the Qur’an and the Sunnah.
Salat jenazah dilaksanakan dengan berdiri dan terdiri atas empat kali takbir, bukan empat rakaat. Karena termasuk ibadah maḥḍah, tata cara pelaksanaannya harus mengikuti tuntunan yang bersumber dari dalil-dalil syariat.
Within Muhammadiyah, the funeral prayer reflects the principle of tanawwuʿ al-sunnah. Historically, The Prophet practiced the same act of worship in more than one valid way. Consequently, the Muhammadiyah Council for Religious Opinion and Reform recognizes two equally authentic versions of the funeral prayer.
The only distinction lies in the sequence of reciting Surah al-Fatiḥah and the blessings upon the Prophet. The supplications themselves remain unchanged.
The First
After the First Takbir
Recite Surah al-Fatihah:
بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ ﴿١﴾ الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ ﴿٢﴾ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ ﴿٣﴾ مَالِكِ يَوْمِ الدِّينِ ﴿٤﴾ إِيَّاكَ نَعْبُدُ وَإِيَّاكَ نَسْتَعِينُ ﴿٥﴾ اهْدِنَا الصِّرَاطَ الْمُسْتَقِيمَ ﴿٦﴾ صِرَاطَ الَّذِينَ أَنْعَمْتَ عَلَيْهِمْ غَيْرِ الْمَغْضُوبِ عَلَيْهِمْ وَلَا الضَّالِّينَ ﴿٧﴾
In the name of Allah, the Most Compassionate, the Most Merciful.
All praise belongs to Allah, Lord of all worlds. The Most Compassionate, the Most Merciful. Master of the Day of Judgment. You alone we worship, and You alone we ask for help. Guide us to the straight path—the path of those upon whom You have bestowed Your favor, not those who have earned Your anger nor those who have gone astray. Aamiin.
Then recite the ṣalawāt:
اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَىٰ مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَىٰ آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ، كَمَا صَلَّيْتَ عَلَىٰ إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَعَلَىٰ آلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ، وَبَارِكْ عَلَىٰ مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَىٰ آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ، كَمَا بَارَكْتَ عَلَىٰ إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَعَلَىٰ آلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ، إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ
O Allah, send Your blessings upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, just as You sent blessings upon Ibrahim and the family of Ibrahim. Bless Muhammad and the family of Muhammad as You blessed Ibrahim and the family of Ibrahim. Indeed, You are Praiseworthy and Glorious.
After the Second Takbir
اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لَهُ وَارْحَمْهُ، وَعَافِهِ وَاعْفُ عَنْهُ، وَأَكْرِمْ نُزُلَهُ، وَوَسِّعْ مُدْخَلَهُ، وَاغْسِلْهُ بِالْمَاءِ وَالثَّلْجِ وَالْبَرَدِ، وَنَقِّهِ مِنَ الْخَطَايَا كَمَا يُنَقَّى الثَّوْبُ الْأَبْيَضُ مِنَ الدَّنَسِ، وَأَبْدِلْهُ دَارًا خَيْرًا مِنْ دَارِهِ، وَأَهْلًا خَيْرًا مِنْ أَهْلِهِ، وَزَوْجًا خَيْرًا مِنْ زَوْجِهِ، وَقِهِ فِتْنَةَ الْقَبْرِ وَعَذَابَ النَّارِ
O Allah, forgive him, have mercy upon him, grant him well-being, pardon him, honor his resting place, expand his grave, cleanse him with water, snow, and hail, purify him from sins as a white garment is cleansed of stains, replace his home with one better than his home, his family with one better than his family, his spouse with one better than his spouse, and protect him from the trial of the grave and the punishment of the Fire.
After the Third Takbir
اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِحَيِّنَا وَمَيِّتِنَا، وَشَاهِدِنَا وَغَائِبِنَا، وَصَغِيرِنَا وَكَبِيرِنَا، وَذَكَرِنَا وَأُنْثَانَا، اللَّهُمَّ مَنْ أَحْيَيْتَهُ مِنَّا فَأَحْيِهِ عَلَى الْإِسْلَامِ، وَمَنْ تَوَفَّيْتَهُ مِنَّا فَتَوَفَّهُ عَلَى الْإِيمَانِ، اللَّهُمَّ لَا تَحْرِمْنَا أَجْرَهُ، وَلَا تَفْتِنَّا بَعْدَهُ
O Allah, forgive those among us who are living and those who have passed away, those who are present and those who are absent, the young and the old, the men and the women; O Allah, whoever You keep alive among us, keep them steadfast in Islam, and whoever You take in death, let them die in faith; O Allah, do not deprive us of the reward for praying over them, and do not let us go astray after them.
After the Fourth Takbir
السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكُمْ وَرَحْمَةُ اللَّهِ وَبَرَكَاتُهُ
