Haedar Nashir expressed profound appreciation for the significant contributions of Prof. Amin Abdullah, Former Chair of the Muhammadiyah Council for Islamic Thought and Judgement from 1995 to 2000, as described in the book ‘‘Filsuf Membumi dan Mencerahkan: Menyemai dan Menuai Legacy Pemikiran Amin Abdullah” (Enlightening Modest Philosopher: Cultivating and Gaining the Legacy of Amin Abdullah’s Thoughts).
Prof. Amin successfully revitalized the intellectual direction of early-generation Muhammadiyah, known for three distinctive approaches: text-based (bayani), logic-based (burhani), and experience-based (irfani).
He also played a significant role in revitalizing the identity of Muhammadiyah, which had experienced stagnation due to national dynamics.
“At that time, Muhammadiyah whose president was Buya Syafi’i Maarif and the secretary was me, promoted Muhammadiyah terms like ‘pencerahan‘ (enlightenment) and ‘berkemajuan’ (progressive) to link thoughts of Ahmad Dahlan and Muhammadiyah’s early generation. Thus, there is an interconnection of Prof. Amin’s thought about Islamic judgment which has become Manhaj Tarjih (the approach of making choices based on careful consideration of Islamic teachings within Muhammadiyah),” said Haedar in the book launching ‘Filsuf Membumi dan Mencerahkan: Menyemai dan Menuai Legacy Pemikiran Amin Abdullah’ (Enlightening Modest Philosopher: Cultivating and Gaining the Legacy of Amin Abdullah’s Thoughts) conducted by the Muhammadiyah Council for Islamic Thought and Judgement on Friday (July 28).
Prof. Amin’s endeavors to revive Muhammadiyah’s true identity gained strong momentum around 2000, leading to the widespread recognition of various Muhammadiyah-specific terms like ‘pencerahan‘ (enlightenment) and ‘berkemajuan’ (progressive). The seamless integration of knowledge, renewal, purification, and dynamism has been deemed crucial to Muhammadiyah’s intellectual movement since 2005.
Furthermore, Haedar commended Prof. Amin’s exceptional character, embodying the values of Muhammadiyah figures: prioritizing public civility, simplicity, and profound wisdom, while encompassing spiritual and virtuous qualities. Haedar wished that Prof. Amin would establish a school to impart his knowledge.
Inspired by Prof. Amin Abdullah’s initiatives, Haedar Nashir encouraged Muhammadiyah members to foster the concept of renewal and Muhammadiyah’s intellectual movement. He emphasized the importance of interconnecting knowledge using the distinct approaches of Bayani, Burhani, and Irfani in various aspects of life.
“I encourage the younger generation, both as institutions and individuals, to embrace the Bayani, Burhani, and Irfani approaches in comprehending the Quran, Sunnah, and life’s complexities. I believe it is beneficial to use these approaches alongside existing academic paradigms for analyzing social phenomena,” said Haedar.
