MUHAMMADIYAH.OR.ID, PERLIS – The relationship between Muhammadiyah and the Malaysian government, particularly in the field of education, needs to be further strengthened. This was conveyed by Tuanku Syed Faizuddin, the Crown Prince of Perlis, during the 4th Anniversary of Universiti Muhammadiyah Malaysia (UMAM) on Thursday (27/11).
“The relationship between Muhammadiyah, education, and the government here must continue to be reinforced so that efforts to build a society based on pure Islamic teachings—free from extremism and division—can be developed together,” he said.
Tuanku Syed Faizuddin emphasized that the presence of UMAM in Malaysia is not merely that of a higher education institution. Rather, UMAM plays a significant role in strengthening bilateral relations between Indonesia and Malaysia. For this reason, it is important for UMAM to sharpen its commitment, conviction, and solid identity.
“As a young institution reaching four years, UMAM deserves to step forward with confidence and a strong identity. As a young institution, UMAM has proven its commitment as a knowledge-based establishment that strengthens relations between the two countries,” he stated.
Furthermore, the Crown Prince noted that UMAM’s academic programs must focus on producing intellectuals who bring meaningful contributions to society.
“UMAM’s role in organizing academic programs must aim toward accelerating regional intellectual networks and research that generate real impact for communities,” he added.
As a higher education institution, UMAM also bears the responsibility of upholding Islamic teachings in their truest form while remaining relevant to contemporary demands.
“UMAM is entrusted with upholding Islamic teachings based on authentic evidence, national thought, and approaches suitable to the needs of the times, an established trust in this state,” he said.
In conclusion, Tuanku Syed Faizuddin expressed his hope that the cooperation between Indonesia and Malaysia through UMAM will continue progressing positively and eventually become an ambassador of knowledge, friendship, and unity between Malaysia, Indonesia, and the wider ASEAN community.
“May the cooperation between Indonesia and Malaysia continue to be strengthened here in Perlis for the shared well-being of the ummah,” he concluded.
