Emergence of a Phenomenon of ‘Krismuha’ (Muhammadiyah Christians)

MUHAMMADIYAH.OR.ID, JAKARTA—A unique phenomenon known as ‘Krismuha‘ (Kristen Muhammadiyah/Muhammadiyah Christians) emerged as a result of Muhammadiyah’s expanding influence. The “Muhammadiyah Christians” refer to individuals who identify themselves as followers of the Christian faith within Muhammadiyah.

Research conducted by the General Secretary of Muhammadiyah Abdul Mu’ti and the Chair of the Muhammadiyah Study and Strategic Partnership Office Fajar Riza Ulhaq revealed that the phenomena appeared since intensive interaction occured between Christian and Muslim students in Muhammadiyah educational institutions. Nevertheless, their relations did not abolish the identity of Christian students.

The research findings were published to be a book in 2009, entitled Kristen Muhammadiyah: Mengelola Pluralitas Agama dalam Pendidikan (Kristen Muhammadiyah: Managing Religious Pluralism in Education)’.

“We never expected that the book would continue to garner significant public interest and enthusiasm. The book portrays Muhammadiyah’s contribution to fostering a more tolerant and inclusive generation of Indonesians who embrace diversity and live harmoniously,” said Fajar at the book review conducted at the Office of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology on Monday (22/5).

Furthermore, the General Secretary of Muhammadiyah, Abdul Mu’ti, highlighted that the 2009 edition of the book lacked sufficient data, prompting the release of a new and more comprehensive edition published by Kompas Gramedia.

“We revised the book to be better, particularly chapter two that we added explanation the bases of pluralisms in Muhammadiyah education in grassroot levels,” said Mu’ti.
