Hajriyanto: Indonesia’s History, Muhammadiyah’s History

MUHAMMADIYAH.OR.ID, JAKARTA – Dr. Hajriyanto Y. Thohari, the Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of the Republic of Indonesia to Lebanon, mentioned that Muhammadiyah figures significantly contributed to the national movement, asserting that Indonesia’s independence history is essentially the history of Muhammadiyah.

“Recognizing the substantial contributions of Muhammadiyah figures before, during, and after independence, it’s clear that the history of Indonesia’s independence is inseparable from Muhammadiyah’s journey,” said Hajriyanto in the Monthly Spiritual Gathering of Muhammadiyah on Friday evening (August 18).

Indeed, the number of national heroes from Muhammadiyah are 22 national heroes. Notably, influential Muhammadiyah figures like Ki Bagus Hadikusumo, Kasman Singodimedjo, and Ir. Sukarno played pivotal roles in formulating Pancasila, the Indonesian state philosophy.

Although the national history may sparsely highlight roles of Muhammadiyah figures, this movement has had unwavering commitment to this nation. For instance, Muhammadiyah published the “Pancasila Darul Ahdi wa Syahadah” document in the 47the Congress (Muktamar) of Muhammadiyah in Makassar, 2015.

The document reaffirms Muhammadiyah’s ideological and political position regarding Pancasila and the Indonesian state. As a product of agreements and witnessing, Darul Ahdi wa Syahadah encapsulates the principles, structure, foundation, authority, and aims of the Pancasila state that need to be achieved.

Furthermore, Hajriyanto recommended Muhammadiyah members to read the book “Derita Seorang Pemimpin” (The Suffering of a Leader) authored by Djarnawi, Ki Bagus Hadikusumo’s son, to enhance their understanding of Darul Ahdi wa Syahadah. The book narrates his father’s struggles in formulating Pancasila.

“This book is essential to reading as it uniquely captures Ki Bagus Hadikusumo’s role, the dynamics within the Investigating Committee for Preparatory Work for Indonesian Independence (BPUPKI) and the Preparatory Committee for Indonesian Independence (PPKI), interactions with Bung Hatta, and the post-independence,” mentioned Hajriyanto.

According to Hajriyanto, it is significant to view the history of Indonesia from the perspective of Muhammadiyah figures, akin to America’s identity exploration after two centuries of independence through John Winthrop’s notion of the “City Upon A Hill.”

Hence, Muhammadiyah members should reaffirm their commitment to Darul Ahdi wa Syahadah by actively contributing to the nation’s development.

“Above all, it’s about instilling this independence with our ideals and realizing the goals outlined in Darul Ahdi wa Syahadah. This entails protecting all Indonesians, advancing overall well-being, fostering intellectual development, and actively participating in global peace to shape Indonesia into the just and prosperous nation we aspire it to be. Besides, we must avoid deceit, corruption, and decay,” said Hajriyanto.
