MUHAMMADIYAH.OR.ID, YOGYAKARTA — As the 2024 presidential election draws near, ‘Aisyiyah has affirmed its neutrality in the race.
Tri Hastuti Rochimah, General Secretary of ‘Aisyiyah, said that the organization is following the political stance of Muhammadiyah, which is to stay out of practical politics.
“‘Aisyiyah always follows the policies of Muhammadiyah,” Tri an annual public lecture of Muhammadiyah (Pengajian Umum Muhammadiyah) on Friday, January 26. “I think Muhammadiyah has survived until today because it is indeed consistent with the political principles (khittah) of 1971.”
The Muhammadiyah political khittah is a commitment to non-partisanship. Muhammadiyah has been a non-partisan organization since its founding in 1912.
Tri said that ‘Aisyiyah members are free to choose their own candidates in the 2024 election. However, the organization will not endorse any particular candidate.
“We are committed to supporting the democratic process,” Tri said. “We want to ensure that the election is fair, just, and transparent.”
‘Aisyiyah has been a vocal advocate for democracy in Indonesia. The organization has worked to educate the public about democracy and to promote gender equality in politics.
In the 2024 election, ‘Aisyiyah is calling for a democratic process that is inclusive and accessible to all, including people with disabilities.
“True democracy must include all strata of society,” Tri said. “We are committed to creating a more just and responsive political space for the diversity of society.”
