In an effort to empower people with disabilities and promote self-sufficiency, Muhammadiyah recently launched a unique program called “Telurmoe.” The initiative, a collaboration between the Muhammadiyah Council for Community Empowerment (MPM) and the Muhammadiyah Department for the Zakat, Infaq, and Shadaqah Management (Lazismu) , officially began on Thursday, February 29 in Sleman, Yogyakarta.
“Telurmoe” focuses on functional egg-laying chicken farming, providing participants with the skills and resources needed to manage their own poultry flocks. This approach not only fosters economic independence but also prioritizes ethical and sustainable practices.
M. Nurul Yamin, Chair of the MPM, emphasized the organization’s commitment to empowering all communities, including those with disabilities. He stressed that their approach centers on making individuals active participants in their own development, stating, “The main principle in community empowerment is to make the community itself the subject of every empowerment activity.”
Yamin explained that “Telurmoe” achieves this goal by equipping participants with the necessary space and facilities to become self-sufficient. This includes specially designed chicken coops that prioritize animal welfare, allowing the chickens to roam freely and reducing stress, ultimately promoting better overall health and egg production.
Lazismu also expressed its strong support for the initiative. Maurawati, Deputy Chair of Lazismu, emphasized their motto, “No One Life Behind,” and applauded the program’s innovative focus on animal welfare. She expressed hope that this model could be replicated in other regions, allowing its benefits to reach a wider range of individuals.
Both MPM and Lazismy highlighted their commitment to providing long-term support that goes beyond mere charity. They believe that empowering individuals through sustainable initiatives, like “Telurmoe,” has a far greater impact on improving the well-being of people with disabilities and other vulnerable groups.
Eko Suwito, Chair of JATAM Difabel Bejen, a beneficiary organization, expressed his gratitude to Muhammadiyah for their support. He stated, “I am thankful to Muhammadiyah for their encouragement and support in enabling us to engage in productive activities.”
The launch of “Telurmoe” marks a significant step towards a more inclusive and equitable society. By equipping individuals with disabilities with the tools and resources they need to thrive, Muhammadiyah’s program empowers them to achieve self-sufficiency and live fulfilling lives.
